Win Shwe, a member of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, was cremated at the detention center which leads one to wonder what kind of abuse might have been covered up in the process of being "detained". All these words that are used to soften the reality of what really has and is happening does not help the public to understand the full gravity of the injustice that the people of Burma are having to endure. Being detained usually means ill treatment in the form of living conditions without toilets, torture (rape, electroshock, beating, being made to stand in tubs of feces, etc). It also is not unlikely that people are either killed in the case of Win Shwe or outright disappeared. Many pro-democracy leaders are still missing from the major rallies in 1988. What does it take for people to care enough for them to do something out of the ordinary of their live routines? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071010/ap_on_re_as/myanmar http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071010/wl_nm/myanmar_activist_dc_1;_ylt=AkgwzsTQVgJwq4Y47Jy24nBlM3wV yipeeyahyah, so let me get this straight. You want people to be silenced about this issue so that the abuses that have been going on much longer than these current protests can continue but maybe not as pronounced as when people actually do speak up? Give me a break. People are already being tortured, killed, displaced (1.5million), beaten, disappeared, extorted, etc, etc, for quite some time now. yipeeyahyah, furthermore this is not about me feeling important but more so a fire that has been stoked in my heart by prayer and compassion. Do you not think this possible or do you always assume the worst in people. If so ask yourself if you might be projecting your inner world upon the outter.

I think for action to take place, people must be willing to come out of their 'comfort zone'. Usually the way that happens is for people to have to be inconvenienced or suffer in some way. Many people are far too comfortable living in their ticky-tacky life styles and satisfying their own pleasures to do this. They don't want to be bothered. But we are in for a surprise as the economy fluctuates and interest rates vacillate, global warming becomes a hot issue and oil prices continue to rise. Like a great volcano about to erupt, people will have to start looking outside themselves and help the poverty stricken and freedom seeking of the world. Burma is still a major hot spot in the crater of the volcano.

You will be sacrificed for activists outside who are comfortably enjoying safety and making themselves important talking about freeburma.
