Peacock in my front yard

Peacock in my front yard?
Today I get to my house and I hear my dog barking, usually it's a sign that there is a deer or a bird or some type of animal outside that she wants to chase; but not today. I live in New Jersey, desidious forest area on a house near a farm on top of a hill. I look outside the window and I see a 6 foot male peacock on my front porch, which was extremely exciting and odd. It has a blue neck and beautiful tail of feathers. I searched on google to see if this habitat is normal, and the answers I found were very unhelpful. They naturally live in Asia and Africa; places like India, China, and Burma. Do peacocks live in this environment? Any other information would be helpful because I'm trying to figure out how and why it got on my porch.

No, they aren't native to america. It mostly likely escaped from a private owner. I would call animal control right away! Im not sure, it varies from state to state, but it may be illegal to own in your state with out a license!

I'd go up to the farm you live near and ask if it's there. We used to own one and he was quite mean! He'd chase us. He'd go wondering for food if we didn't feed him yet. Be careful, they may chase you (that's why we rehomed him, he pecked my sister several times when she was in the yard playing) They don't stay in pens very well.

Yes , in southern climates, without freezing winters. it is probably 'domesticated' which is only a partial not like a family dove, It found you place accomodating, but will be on the search for food. Most owners get regular peacock food and many let them run 'wild' on their property. So they may end up most anywhere. Peacocks will do well in the mid and far west, and florida. they are not native of the USA David in Jesus amazing grace that saved me John chapter 3 and then gave me John 10 the life more abundantly Revelation 3:19&20 I prayed "I need you Jesus help me, I am sorry for my sins, come into my heart and be my friend, amen" It tells how Jesus knocks on our heart door to come in and be our friend if we ask him in to forgive sin. Have a great day, and welcome to peacock world

I am not aware of the North American Continent being a natural habitat of the Peacock. Most Peacocks were brought to this country and as there was found to be a market for them as an exoctic pet their population has grown. I would suspect that one of two things has happened. . . .1) This bird got loose from it's owner. . . . . 2) It's owner got tired of taking care of it and though it to be in the bird's best interest to just let it go verses trying to find it another owner. Now,I really doubt that the bird is 6ft as they generally don't grow that tall. It might have a 6ft length measuring from it's head to the end of it's tail but as far as height, they are generally 3-4ft tall from the top of their head to the floor. A peacock could live by it'self as it is a bird and has the natural instinct to forage but you could help it some and enjoy it's beauty at the same time. Go to a Feed Store and get some Scratch (mixture of grains) and keep some of it out for the bird. . . . either until the owner shows up or until you get tired of hearing it's "cry" which can almost sound like a cat with it's tail stuck in a door. My neighbor has a pair of Peacocks and since I don't live right across the street from him,the Peacock cry is somewhat facinating to me and I enjoy it but the neighbors right across the street from it is tired of it's "cry".

someone in northern virginia was raising peacocks, decided he didn't want to do it anymore, and let them all go. they are surviving just fine. They are generally spotted during mating season. get out your camera.
