Will there ever be a democracy in Myanmar?
Previously I lived in a Thai province that is close to Myanmar- Chiang Rai. Occasionally, I would have to go to a border town called: Mai Sai, to take care of my visa. While waiting for my visa I would shop in Myanmar, just beyond the border. At the time I was well aware of the situation in Myanmar, luckily there was no violence in the area I was shopping in. It is a shame what is going on over there. The millitary is so damn defiant of outside influence that I am starting to believe its going to be a long while before we see a democracy in that country. Perhaps some of the soldiers within the Junta will rebel and turn on it? This could be probable. Otherwise, it may escalate into what happened in Cambodia, sadly. The Burmese are great people, its a shame they have to go through this. They have been through enough already. I hope something positive happens soon. What do you think? It would be interesting to hear from some Burmese people.

If only the military is willing to relinguish control, otherwise there will never be any democracy.

The only way the Burmese people will be able to get their government back from the Junta is if they take it back by force. This is a shame because they're generally peaceful people who try to avoid conflict whenever possible. But unfortunately, I don't see any other government, or the UN doing anything other than talking about sanctions etc. etc. Maybe these latest protest will have helped to strengthen their resolve. I know that monks are highly revered so perhaps seeing them beat and killed will have a strong effect. I feel so helpless. I wish there were something I could do. I wish them all the best also.

If you are interested in hearing from some Burmese, Let's me start with this... I am Burmese :) Burma was once democratic country from 1948 to 1962 and, believe it or not, she was on her way to become first Asian Tiger, way ahead of Japan. Burma is very rich in natural resources and she will never make her people poor like this. However, a good of ruling people exploit those natural resources and use them for their own good. People of Burma always want "Democracy". You would have see Burma was silence for nearly 20 years but, they all come out to street and express their true feeling once they got a chance. Here, Question is not what they want, but whether they gonna get it or not...! Very interesting. People of Burma waited nearly 30 years and they revolted in 1988 when they got chance. But sadly military crackdown and again people waited nearly another 20 years and now, they come out again. If we don't succee this time, we will wait another chance no matter how long it's going to take. But remember, everytime it happen number of underground activists increased and keep working for another chance. For the change. Let's go back to the time when we lost democracy. Why we lost it? Because we had problem among ethnics groups but our ethnics group leaders were trying hard to find solution. However, General Ne Win took adventage of such situation and took power. Now, we have agreements among ethnics groups, it has been settle down but military govt won't give it back. This time, ethnics are united, but need to be legalize at national convention and enacted in new constitution. Anyway, Remember, we want meaningful democracy, not military puppet democracy. Whether it's by people revolation or not, we gonna get democracy. If it's gained by revolation, we gonna get true and meaningful democracy, if not military government will give their kind of democracy in which over 20% of govt position are reserved for military officers. All main positions will be controlled by military. But, it's still democracy but not the one what we want. "In short, we will have demoracry sooner or later for sure but depend what kind of democracy it would be." Hope this answer yours.

I hope the best for the people of Myanmar and not just for the Burmans. But as long as outside interests keep supporting the military junta and providing them with weapons and hard currency, outlooks are grim http://www.asiasentinel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=736&Itemid=32 You cannot compare Myanmar with Cambodia under Pol Pot apart from the fact that the West ignored what went on. The Khmer Rouge killed its own people on an unprecedented scale and chased down ethnic minorities (primarily Vietnamese) to cover the inherent failure of the Khmer Rouge ideology. Khmer Rouge made several military incursions into southern Vietnam before the Vietnamese retaliated by invading Cambodia and sending the Khmer Rouge into jungle hideouts. Despite that this invasion ended a truly tyrannical and genocidal rule, the West and the UN continued to recognize Khmer Rouge as representing Cambodia and the Cambodian people on the world's diplomatic stage. If - heaven forbid - a civil war is in store in Myanmar, it will be more like what has been and is going on in Africa with different people (tribes) clashing. The Myanmar situation is much more complex than the situation was in Cambodia 30 years ago.
