This was in the wiki article - "These cats are thought to have remained in Thailand until it was invaded by the Burmese in the 18th century; returning soldiers may have taken the temple cats with them back to Burma."

I don't know about the Birmans, but the story with the Burmese is that the person who is credited with bringing them to United States supposedly found one while on vacation in Burma and brought it back to breed with his Siamese. So he called it a Burmese. Burmese are great cats. We have 3 in my family.

I would suggest: http://www.cfainc.org/breeds.html for breed profiles and articles. That should answer most of your questions. The articles are the most informative, although the breed standards and profiles are interesting. purrs

The breed originated FIFTY YEARS ago in Thailand. Soldiers from Burma brought the cats back to Thailand, hence the name "Burmese". And since the Burmese is a purebred cat you're not going to see them running around in the streets. And with 98% of the cats on this PLANET no particular breed you'd probably only see one in Burma or Thailand if there happened to be a breeder of them there.
